BUSINESS

INDUSTRY

Lexington suffered from the farm crisis during the mid-80's. Today, Lexington is a community on the grow. Lexington is considered one of the top retail hubs in Nebraska for communities between 5,000 and 9,999 as named by the University of Nebraska, Agricultural Research Division. Most any product or service you could want can be found in Lexington, from major discount and department stores to the many specialty shops. Whether you need to get a car serviced, or you're looking for a night on the town, Lexington has something for everyone.

Lexington is fortunate to have a downtown business district that is full of historical buildings and is home of the many specialty shops. In downtown Lexington you can find shoes, men's, women's and children's clothing; jewelry, flowers, electronic equipment, collectables and gift items; restaurants, bakery goods, hardware items, grocery items and auto parts. Downtown has many service and professional businesses, including attorneys, dentists, real estate, insurance, beauty salons, pharmacies, accountants, banking, washing and dry cleaning and an automobile dealership.

Also, Lexington has numerous businesses along Plum Creek Parkway (from the viaduct to the interstate) including: restaurants, lodging facilities, hardware, banking, industry, automobile dealership, grocery items, department stores, radio station and discount stores.

Industry is also on the grow. In 1990, Iowa Beef Packers, largest in the world, opened a beef processing plant. Employment at the plant has reached 2,400 with a payroll of $58 million. Lexington is proud of the other fine industries that make specialty items. Most of the companies are known beyond the city of Lexington, even internationally. Manufactured in Lexington are: specialty farm equipment, Orthman's Manufacturing; furniture, Designer Craft Woodworking; defense contract and precision metal work, Eilers Machine and Welding; Lexington Alfalfa Dehydrators; precast concrete products & construction, Paulsen Development Co.; electronic pagers and custom keyboards, Reach/Veetronix's; plastic fencing, Permalatt, Inc.; meat scraps, tallow & hides, Nebraska By-Products.

Lexington has a large industrial park near Interstate 80 that is the home of three large industries, with room for expansion.

Lexington has recovered nicely from the agricultural crisis of the mid-80's. The net taxable sales in Lexington have exceeded the $80 million mark for the last 4 years.
